Carefree Respite
A multi-phase landscape renovation transformed disconnected outdoor spaces through improved infrastructure, drainage, circulation, and a cohesive palette of native and arid-region plantings.
Located in the quiet desert community of Carefree, Arizona, this residence and landscape were completely updated over the course of several projects.
Inspired initially by the construction of a garage for the owner’s hobbies and collections, the work expanded to address aging infrastructure, drainage challenges, circulation, and a series of disconnected outdoor spaces.
The site is flanked by major washes on either side, creating significant grading and drainage challenges. Due to the age of the home, new infrastructure was also required for both irrigation and lighting. Drains, riprap, stone, and native boulders were incorporated to help mitigate drainage issues while maintaining the character of the surrounding landscape.
The driveway was improved to accommodate a full turnaround for frequent deliveries, while unused patios and pathways were modified to create meaningful places of rest and enjoyment.
The major challenge was connecting these previously disconnected spaces into a cohesive landscape that could be experienced throughout the course of a day. Native and arid-region plantings were used to unify the property while providing color and texture. Connected pathways now guide movement throughout the site, while stabilized granite provides a natural surface that avoids adding to the Valley’s heat island.
The result is a more connected and functional landscape, with each space contributing to the experience of the property as a whole.
In the evening, the poolscape transforms with elegant outdoor lighting that accentuates the beautiful textures of the Joshua Tree and totem pole cacti.
